1. Compact Cerabar Models: PMP11, PMP21, PMP23, PMC11 and PMC21

Compact Cerabar models can be considered for standard industrial pressure measurement when their measuring range and process connection are suitable for the application. Within this group, the model code, measuring cell and output options should be assessed together.

Cerabar PMP11, PMP21 and PMP23

These models are designed for compact pressure measurement applications. However, PMP11, PMP21 and PMP23 should not be assumed to have identical technical specifications. Their measuring ranges, pressure references, electrical connections, process connections and output options should be checked against the relevant Technical Information document.

Cerabar PMC11 and PMC21

PMC11 and PMC21 are compact models featuring oil-free capacitive ceramic sensors. However, the measurement type and technical limits must be evaluated separately for each model.

The manufacturer lists the following key specifications for the Cerabar PMC21:

  • Pressure measuring range: 100 mbar to 40 bar

  • Reference accuracy: ±0.3%

  • Process temperature: −25 °C to +100 °C

  • Measurement type: Absolute or gauge pressure

  • Sensor: Oil-free capacitive ceramic measuring cell

These are general specifications published for the PMC21. Before ordering, the current technical documentation for the selected version should be checked against the actual process conditions.

For PMC11, numerical specifications such as measuring range and accuracy should likewise be verified against the current Technical Information document for the relevant product.

When selecting between compact models, comparing only the price or maximum pressure rating is insufficient. Sensor technology, process conditions, connection compatibility and the electrical requirements of the control system should also be considered.

2. Cerabar M Family: PMC51, PMP51 and PMP55

When evaluating Cerabar M models, the differences in sensor technology and process connection are important selection factors.

  • PMC51: Model family featuring a ceramic measuring cell.

  • PMP51: Model family associated with silicon sensor technology.

  • PMP55: Model family used with diaphragm seal solutions.

These distinctions do not mean that every configuration within a model family has the same measuring range, accuracy or temperature limits. In particular, diaphragm seal systems may be affected by the seal geometry, diaphragm material, fill fluid, process connection and temperature conditions.

When selecting a Cerabar M instrument, establish the following requirements:

  1. Whether absolute or gauge pressure must be measured

  2. Normal operating pressure and maximum process pressure

  3. Minimum and maximum process temperatures

  4. Chemical properties of the process fluid

  5. Process connection and wetted materials

  6. Output signal and compatibility with the control system

  7. Whether a diaphragm seal is required

Source verification: Technical specifications for this model group should be verified against the manufacturer's Technical Information document corresponding to the actual order code. A general product-family description is not a substitute for the specifications or performance requirements of a particular variant.

3. Cerabar B Generation: PMP71B and PMC71B

PMP71B and PMC71B are models within the Cerabar B generation. However, their sensor designs, measuring ranges, accuracy, temperature limits and communication options should not be treated as interchangeable.

Technical evaluation should focus on the following:

  • Required pressure measurement type and measuring range

  • Sensor and measuring-cell configuration

  • Reference accuracy and the overall measurement effects under actual operating conditions

  • Process connection and wetted materials

  • Output and communication options

  • Project-specific requirements, such as hazardous-area approvals or functional safety

Communication options such as HART, PROFIBUS PA or PROFINET over Ethernet-APL should only be specified when supported by the relevant model and order configuration. Their availability across the entire Cerabar range, or across every variant, should not be assumed.

Similarly, approvals such as SIL, ATEX or IECEx cannot be confirmed solely from the product family name. Compliance must be verified against the documentation for the specific instrument and the applicable certificate scope.

Rather than listing every technical variant of PMP71B and PMC71B in this general guide, this section summarizes the principal selection criteria. Exact values should be taken from the current manufacturer documentation for the selected product.

4. Cerabar PMP43: Pressure Measurement for Hygienic Applications

Cerabar PMP43 is a pressure transmitter for hygienic applications within the Endress+Hauser Compact Line. It can be considered for food and beverage processes and other applications requiring an appropriate hygienic design. Suitability should be determined according to the required process connection, cleaning conditions and applicable approvals.

The manufacturer's product page lists the following key specifications:

Technical specification

Information published on the manufacturer's product page

Pressure measuring range

400 mbar to 100 bar

Process temperature

Depending on configuration, ranges including −40 °C to +130 °C or −20 °C to +200 °C are listed

These are general product-page specifications. The applicable limits and features must be confirmed for the selected order code.

Different PMP43 technical documents cover communication options such as 4–20 mA analog, 4–20 mA HART and IO-Link. This does not mean that all communication options are available simultaneously on the same instrument. The appropriate option must be selected according to the order configuration.

For hygienic applications, process connection, surface and material requirements, cleaning conditions and required approvals should be evaluated separately. Approvals such as 3-A or EHEDG should only be claimed when supported by the documentation for the relevant product configuration.

5. Cerabar PMP75: Diaphragm Seals and High-Temperature Applications

Cerabar PMP75 is a digital pressure transmitter with a fully welded metal diaphragm seal for measuring the pressure of gases or liquids. It can be considered for applications where direct contact between the process fluid and the measuring cell is unsuitable, or where process conditions require a diaphragm seal.

The manufacturer's product page lists the following key technical specifications:

Technical specification

Information published on the manufacturer's product page

Pressure measuring range

400 mbar to 400 bar

Accuracy

0.075% + diaphragm seal effect

Process temperature

Depending on configuration, options from −70 °C to +400 °C

Listed wetted-material options

316L, Alloy C276, Monel, tantalum and PTFE foil options

These values do not indicate that every material and temperature option is available across all measuring ranges. The suitable configuration must be determined using the manufacturer's technical documentation.

The following factors are important when selecting a diaphragm seal:

  • Chemical properties of the process fluid and material compatibility

  • Minimum and maximum process temperatures

  • Normal operating pressure and potential pressure surges

  • Diaphragm seal type, diaphragm material and connection geometry

  • Suitability of the fill fluid for the process conditions

  • Installation position and temperature-related measurement effects

The diaphragm seal is part of the measurement system. Therefore, considering only the transmitter's nominal accuracy is insufficient; the additional measurement effects introduced by the diaphragm seal must also be evaluated.

How to Select the Right Cerabar Pressure Transmitter

The following criteria should be evaluated together when selecting a suitable Cerabar model.

1. Measurement type

First, establish whether the application requires gauge or absolute pressure measurement. These measurement types use different reference pressures, so the selection should not be based on the pressure range alone.

2. Measuring range and operating conditions

Determine the normal operating pressure, minimum and maximum values, and potential overpressure conditions. The instrument's measuring range must suit the application while meeting the required measurement performance.

3. Sensor technology

The choice between ceramic and silicon sensor technologies should be evaluated in the context of the model design and process conditions. Sensor type alone does not determine overall instrument performance; the measuring range and other technical limits must also be checked.

4. Process temperature and material compatibility

Process temperature is different from ambient temperature. Wetted materials must be chemically compatible with the process fluid. For diaphragm seal applications, temperature effects and the properties of the fill fluid must also be included in the selection assessment.

5. Process connection and installation

Threaded, flanged or hygienic connection options should be selected according to the mechanical requirements of the application. Installation space, vibration, pressure surges and compatibility with the existing process connection should also be checked.

6. Output signal and communication

The suitability of options such as 4–20 mA, HART or IO-Link must be verified against the instrument's order configuration and the control system requirements. A communication option available for one model family should not automatically be assumed to be available for other models.

7. Certifications and process requirements

Requirements such as ATEX, IECEx, SIL or hygienic approvals should be defined according to the project specification. Compliance must be confirmed using the documentation for the exact instrument variant and the applicable certificates.

Replacing an Older Cerabar Model

When replacing a Cerabar instrument, a similar model name or overlapping measuring range is not sufficient to establish compatibility. The technical suitability of the replacement for the existing system must be verified.

Use the following checklist:

  • Full model and order code of the existing instrument

  • Measurement type and pressure range

  • Sensor and measuring-cell characteristics

  • Process connection and wetted materials

  • Process and ambient temperature limits

  • Power supply, output signal and communication

  • Required certifications and safety approvals

  • Installation dimensions, electrical connections and accessories

  • Production status of the existing product and technical documentation for the proposed alternative

Important: A new model should not be described as a direct equivalent until a technical comparison has been completed. Replacement decisions should be based on the actual order codes and the requirements of the application.
