What is Solvent

Humanity has caused many damages on nature especially recently and global climate change has started to occur because of this. Therefore, we pay more attention to use the products we use for our own health and for environmental awareness.

Europe and other developed countries restrict the use of products harmful to human health partially or completely. One of the restrictions made in this context is the chemical products known as solvents in our country in the industry. With the low cost in our country, social awareness should be created by providing information about the dangers and damages of the preferred products.

What is Solvent

Solvent is the word meaning passed down from English to our language and is the product generally known as solvent in the industry. These are liquids used to dissolve or dilute other substances in the area to be treated. It consists of many different hazardous chemicals in the solvent, and after use, it becomes hazardous waste. Solvents, which have a wide range of use in the industry, should be used according to their absolute content information, taking into consideration the occupational health.

It is possible to examine it in two classes, traditional and biological based, according to solvent solvent production methods. While traditional method is obtained by distilling natural gas or petroleum; It is made by processing renewable raw materials.

Many of the solvents that can cause serious harm to human health and the environment are in the carcinogen group and their use is restricted or even prohibited in all developed countries. Unfortunately, in our country, instead of using alternative and environmentally friendly products, products that harm nature and the environment are used due to their low cost. There is currently no restriction on the use of solvents in our country, but studies continue within the scope of the European Union Harmonization Laws.

While using the substances of solvents, they are explained in the occupational health and safety regulations. In this context, it is necessary to take the necessary precautions and measures for the health of the work and workers and to use personal protective equipment.

Usage Areas of Solvents

Solvents have a wide range of uses in industry. Solvent types and usage areas in general;

  • Acetone: Industrial Coatings and cosmetics

  • Trichloroethylene: In degreasing

  • Toulen: Industrial coating and some production jobs

  • Methylchloride: Paint stripping applications

  • Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK): In printing application, ink content and ink extraction processes and insecticide production

  • Perchloro Ethylene: In dry cleaning applications

  • Cyclohexanone: Plastics, insecticide production, coating applications in electronic production

  • N Methyl Pyrrolidone (NMP): In plastic production, electronics industry, insecticide production, petrochemical industry applications

  • Tetrahydrofuran (THF): It is used in places such as plastic production, polymer coating, insecticide production, perfume production.

Solvent Hazards

Synthetic solvents produced in the laboratory have been found to have a carcinogenic effect as a result of researches. As a result of the researches carried out with the development of science and technology, it has been observed that there are serious problems for both humans and the environment.

As a result of the researches, the use of synthetic solvents and products containing solvents, which are harmful in baby products, toys, furniture, household items and many areas, are prohibited in many countries. Unfortunately, despite these prohibitions, harmful solvents are produced illegally and can still be used due to their low cost.

  • Most of the solvents are flammable volatile materials and can easily evaporate and give the environment toxic and explosive gas mixtures. Therefore, do not smoke at all to reduce the risk of fire in the stored area.

  • It is possible that many solvents are volatile and give explosive gas to the environment. Because of these features, it contributes directly or indirectly to the occurrence of occupational accidents.

  • Intense solvent exposure can cause damage to the skin, eyes or internal organs. To avoid this situation, MSDS (Safety Data Sheet) form of the product should be examined and necessary precautions should be taken.

  • In case of inhalation or swallowing of solvent vapor, it causes symptoms such as throat burning, nausea, vomiting, difficult breathing, fast and irregular heartbeat, fatigue. Some solvents can cause cancer, kidney or nervous disorders. In some cases, solvents can also have a narcotic effect.
These particles can enter the blood when solvent contaminated air comes to the lungs. These chemical products mixed in the blood are very likely to damage other organs.

  • In contact with the eyes, it causes burning, itching, tearing and redness. Prolonged exposure to solvent vapor may cause temporary visual impairment, permanent itching or permanent visual impairment.

  • In contact with the skin, it may cause dryness, crusting and itching. If the solvent stays on the skin for a long time, it may enter the bloodstream and cause other diseases.

According to researches, it has been stated that the use of solvents can cause lung, kidney, pancreatic and bladder cancers.
Unfortunately, there are solvents with very different densities and properties at workplaces. However, there is a possibility that more dangerous products may occur by reacting with other chemicals in the workplace. In summary, although there are solvents with a concentration below acceptable values, their coexistence may cause narcosis effect and other health problems.

Our Solvent Alternative Environmental Solutions

Chemical solvents are a difficult product to store and cause serious damage to work and worker health. At the same time, products appear in the hazardous waste after use; Maximum care should be taken in terms of storage, use and use with the products created after use and, if possible, more environmentally friendly solutions should be used instead of solvents.
